Today we remember a woman who taught others to find their voice and advocate for other’s while quietly negotiating away pieces of her own.
She was known by many names.
Daughter.
Sister.
Mother.
Friend.
Advocate.
Reformist.
Problem Solver.
Mentor.
Leader.
Strategist.
Doer.
She cared deeply, carried genuine empathy, felt emotionally, carried responsibility effortlessly and made space for others wherever she went.
She helped people see possibilities they could not yet see in themselves.
She challenged assumptions.
Opened doors.
Sparked transformation.
And yet, somewhere along the way, she became fluent in a language she never intended to master:
The language of shrinking.
She learned to soften her truths.
To make her more palatable.
Less disruptive.
Less intense.
Less threatening.
Less inconvenient.
To carry the weight without revealing the burden.
To edit herself before anyone else could.
She learned that belonging often came with conditions.
That acceptance could be earned through accommodation.
That disagreement could cost her belonging.
So, she became smaller in places where she should have been expansive.
Quieter in moments that called for her voice.
More agreeable when her convictions deserved expression.
The shrinking happened gradually.
Socially.
Professionally.
Emotionally.
Spiritually.
She became so skilled at making space for others that she stopped noticing how little space she occupied herself.
Until the distance between who she was and who she presented became difficult to measure.
Today we acknowledge her passing.
